Friends of Yoga Background & History
In 1970 Friends of Yoga (FRYOG) International was founded in India to:
- Promote the comprehensive nature and benefits of yoga throughout the world
- Advise on yoga education and teacher training
- Conduct research
Wilfred Clark (1889-1981) who was introduced to yoga in 1916, was appointed Friends of Yoga Honorary Organiser for the UK and later became Honorary Director and Vice President of the parent body. He was also responsible for setting up the British Wheel of Yoga and was a founder member of The Yoga for Health Foundation.
In 1991 Pauline Mainland took over leadership of Friends of Yoga and made a significant and enduring contribution by appointing volunteers to the positions of Diploma Board of Assessors, District Secretaries, Registrar and newsletter Editor/Publisher.
2001 to present
In 2001 Margaret Pateman assumed the role of Chair. Margaret built on Pauline’s substantial contribution. New governance arrangements, with a UK Board of Trustees, were established; a system of financial reporting was introduced with annual general meetings; and the website www.friendsofyoga.co.uk launched. In 2002 an Executive Committee was appointed to be elected annually.
All these Executive Committee posts have been and continue to be held on a voluntary basis, placing the emphasis on karma yoga and promoting a world-wide spirit of friendship. The Executive Committee meet every six months to discuss matters relating to the administration and running of Friends of Yoga. Without unnecessary overheads, the running costs are kept to a minimum, thus enabling the annual membership subscription to remain at a manageable level. The income raised from membership subscriptions is utilised for various expenditure incurred in running and promoting Friends of Yoga.
The Executive Committee always welcomes offers of help to continue to run Friends of Yoga. See our People Page for current Executive Committee and Administration Team.
